Brandon Drover, one of 24 College of the North Atlantic students heading to Saskatoon to compete in the Skills Canada National Competition running from May 26-27, will be representing Prince Philip Drive campus in the Autobody Repair competition. Brandon won gold at 18th Annual Provincial Skills Canada Skilled Trade & Technology Competitions held on Friday, March 27.

College of the North Atlantic (CNA) collected 38 medals at the 18th Annual Provincial Skills Canada Skilled Trade & Technology Competitions on Friday, March 27. Of the 38 medals, 15 were gold, 13 were silver and 10 were bronze. Twenty four CNA students will now make up Team Newfoundland and Labrador for the Skills National Competition taking place in Saskatoon, May 28-29, 2015.

The one-day event had more than 750 intermediate, secondary and post-secondary students come together at CNA’s Prince Philip Drive campus for a day of skills competitions, conferences, campus tours and a career fair. The Ridge Road campus took Top Placing Schools Post-Secondary category with fellow CNA campuses Prince Philip Drive and Clarenville taking second and third respectively.

“It was a remarkable day for everyone involved – and I am very proud of the exceptional skill level and confidence displayed by our students,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, President and CEO of College of the North Atlantic. “Witnessing the day’s events, I was impressed by the knowledge and abilities of our students. All competitors refined their skills and tested their potential both as a student and a person. Everyone was able to accomplish something, and the students that made it to the podium and received a gold medal will do a great job representing their college and the province when they arrive in Saskatoon.”

At the nationals, 24 CNA students in 23 competition areas will help represent the province, with potential for more as the provincial Welding and Sheet Metal competitions are scheduled to take place on April 10 at CNA’s Burin campus. Nine campuses will be represented so far, including Prince Philip Drive, Ridge Road, Seal Cove, Clarenville, Placentia, Bonavista, Port aux Basques, Bay St. George and Corner Brook.

CNA’s Dean of Industrial Trades and Vice President of Industry and Community Engagement, Robin Walters, is confident Team NL will rise to the occasion in Saskatoon.

“We have seen some great achievements come from our competitors once they hit the national stage and we know they will bring their A-game again this year,” said Walters. “This is the opportunity of the lifetime for our students - I have every confidence that they will make the most of this opportunity.”
