St. John’s, February 9, 2001 - Petroleum Engineering Technology students at College of the North Atlantic’s Ridge Road campus (St. John’s) have formed their own student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

The SPE is a non-profit organization with more than 50,000 professionals from oil and gas producing regions around the world with its main focus on collecting, disseminating and exchanging technical information.

The Atlantic Canada section, which supports the new student chapter, received its charter in February of 1996. Since then it has grown steadily as oil and gas activities in the region have taken root.

As part of its regular activities, the SPE, in co-operation with the Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association, holds monthly technical luncheons with guest speakers from the Society at large. To show its support for the student chapter, the Atlantic section sponsors three student seats at each luncheon.

The student chapter presently has 45 members comprised of second and third-year students. The founding executive consists of: Jason Cooper, president, Shawn Johnson, secretary, and Marsha Hiscock, treasurer.

Upcoming events for the student chapter include a day trip to the Bull Arm site to tour the FPSO as well as a tour of the North Atlantic Refining operation at Come By Chance.
