School Overview
Newfoundland and Labrador is a land rich in
cultural heritage, minerals, forests, fish and
wildlife… an abundance of natural resources
upon which the people of this land have
drawn for millennia. With increasing global
emphasis on environmental education,
sustainable tourism, integrated resource
policy and ecosystem-based management,
College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) School
of Tourism and Natural Resources has become
a leader in applying these principles
to the management, protection and utilization
of our natural resources. With six well integrated
programs across broad tourism
and natural resources sectors, the school is
home to training opportunities for many of
Canada’s fastest growing industries.
With two- and three-year diploma programs
of study encompassing forest management,
fish and wildlife monitoring, environmental
remediation, fisheries enforcement, hospitality
management and adventure tourism,
the school provides a wealth of knowledge,
understanding and experiential education
to the natural resources and tourism industries.
With a central core of studies related to the
protection and enhancement of our natural
and cultural resources, programs within
the school reflect a deep concern for the
environment as well as the opportunities
for sustainable development, which come
from the effective management of these
resources. In-depth training prepares the
graduate to take advantage of economic
opportunities derived from these resources
while protecting the resources into perpetuity.
Join us in the journey for environmental
sustainability!
Transferability
The School of Tourism and Natural Resources
holds formal credit transfer agreements
in place with many colleges and universities
in Canada and abroad, allowing graduates
to transfer CNA credits to other diploma
and university degree programs with
advanced standing. The school has developed
transfer agreements with Memorial
University of Newfoundland, Cape Breton
University, Alberta’s Athabasca University,
Lakehead University and Laurentian
University in Ontario, British Columbia’s
Royal Roads University and Thompson
Rivers University, and the University of
New Brunswick. These agreements permit
students in qualifying programs to transfer
from college diploma to university degree
programs, reducing the time and financial
resources required to complete a continuing
advanced diploma or degree program.
For a complete list of transfer agreements
between CNA and other Canadian and international
colleges and universities, contact
the college or see the current online
edition of the Newfoundland and Labrador

Accreditation
Accreditation is a non-governmental process
for assessment of educational programs
against rigorous education and industry
standards, proving that the program
meets or exceeds the challenges of technological
and industry change. This requires
continuous curriculum development, review
and program improvement.
Graduates of accredited programs within
the School of Tourism and Natural Resources
leave with the skill set required by industry
and the ability to incorporate these
skills into the current workplace. Accreditation
also provides assurance to employers
that graduates of the school have the
knowledge and competencies required by
industry.
Currently, three programs within the school
have achieved national or international accreditation:
- Environmental Technology (Co-op) –
Canadian Technology Accreditation
Board (CTAB)
- Fish and Wildlife Technician – North
American Wildlife Technology
Association (NAWTA)
- Forest Resources Technician – recognized
by the Canadian Institute of Forestry
(CIF) and the Society of American
Foresters (SAF), and accredited by CTAB.
