Students win medals at national competition
Congratulations to Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2007 which won six medals at the 13th Canadian Skills Competition (CSC).
The competition was held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from June 6-9, 2007 at the Trade Centre at Prairieland Park. Of the 13 medals won by Team Newfoundland and Labrador, six were taken home by College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students.
Taking gold was Shawn Edwards of Prince Philip Drive campus for IT and Network Support, taking silver in Electronics was Stephen Genge of Ridge Road campus, and taking bronze were Becki Peckham of Prince Philip Drive for Graphic Design, Michael Martin of Prince Philip Drive for Website Development, Jonathon Yeo of Ridge Road for Architectural Technology and Design and Justin Flight of Prince Philip Drive for Automotive Service.
“From a Skills Canada perspective, I am certainly very pleased with the overall results, as well as the success demonstrated by our college students,” says John Oates, campus administrator at CNA’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s, and President of Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador. “It was a great competition and we are very proud of all our competitors. They represented their province with confidence and competence. Congratulations to all.”
The CSC is an Olympic-style skills competition showcasing students' technical and leadership skills. Students participate in practical challenges designed to test skills required in technology and trade occupations, competing against other youth from across the nation.
The main goal of the CSC programming throughout the year is to deliver hands-on opportunities to explore careers and to raise awareness for the general population of the value of skilled trades and technology occupations.
More than 500 students from secondary and post-secondary institutions throughout the country competed in 40 competitions, having earned a spot on their team through the provincial skilled trade and technology competitions. For Newfoundland and Labrador, that was the 10th annual Provincial Skills Competition which took place in March and was hosted mainly by CNA in St. John’s.
Qualifying National Skills Canada winners earn the right to compete in the 40th World Skills Competition, taking place in Calgary, Alberta in 2009.

Corner Brook student takes home silver medal
The 10 th annual Provincial Skills Canada competition was held on Friday, March 30 in St. John’s. College of the North Atlantic’s entrants competed in a number of the post-secondary competition categories and walked away with 16 medals.
One of the winners was Mark Wilton, an entry level welding student at the college’s Corner Brook campus.
Wilton won the silver metal for welding at the Skills Canada competition against seven other welding students. He created two welding projects using various types of welding methods such as Flux Core welding, MIG Welding, TIG Welding and Stick welding.
CNA has been a major supporter of Skills Canada since its inception in Newfoundland and Labrador, hosting competitions and Skills Canada events all across the Province.
Over 1,000 students attended the Skills Canada conference – 250 competition finalists from high school, college, and apprenticeship students, 650 Grade 9 students for the Career Fair and Career Information Sessions, and 100 Grade 9 girls for the Skills Work for Women Conference Competition.
Skills Canada has a large network of volunteers who design competitions, run events, etc. Over 250 volunteers participated in the 6 th Annual Skilled Career Day.
Students shine at national skills competition!
Congratulations to Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2006, who won six medals at the 12th Canadian Skills Competition (CSC). The annual competition was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May 23 to 26, 2006. Of the six medals won by Team NL, three were taken home by College of the North Atlantic students:
Gold Medal in Graphic Design – Post Secondary: Geri Coady – College of the North Atlantic, Prince Philip Drive
Silver Medal in Architectural Design – Post Secondary: Brad Coish – College of the North Atlantic, Ridge Road
Bronze Medal in Refrigeration - Post Secondary: Edward Decker – College of the North Atlantic, Ridge Road
Other members of Team NL included Gold medalist Sarah Peach of Woodford’s Training Centre, Kelligrews for Aesthetics, and Bronze medal winners Heidi Morris, Queen Elizabeth High School, CBS for Job Interview, and Hayward Butler, Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts for Job Skill Demonstration.
“We had a truly fantastic team this year,” says John Oates, campus administrator at College of the North Atlantic’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s, and President of Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador. “The level of maturity and professionalism was very impressive. Every one of our competitors was a terrific representative of the province.”

Faculty Member wins National Award!
Congratulations to Irene O’Brien who has been awarded the Dr. Marshall Mallett Lamp of Knowledge Award by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists Board of Directors. Irene is an Instructor, Medical Radiography with the College of the North Atlantic, Prince Philip Drive Campus and has been a central figure in the Health Sciences Program for many years. Students Score at Skills Canada Competitions
The 8th annual Provincial Skills Canada Competitions were held Friday, May 6, in St. John’s, with a very strong showing from College of the North Atlantic students. They competed in 21 post-secondary competition categories, and walked away with 23 medals, including 13 Gold.
The Gold medal winners were part of Team and Labrador who traveled to for the National Skills Canada Competitions on June 4 and 5. All participants did extremely well and were awarded medals in these categories:
Gold: Graphic Design (post-secondary) -- Geri Coady, St. John's Campus, CNA
Bronze: Autobody Repair (post-secondary) -- Andrew Penney St. John's
Cooking (post-secondary) -- James Dillon St. John's Campus, CNA

CNA’s Digital Animation film to air at Nickel Independent Film Festival
The film called Quacked, created by the students and instructors of Digital Animation program at our Bay St. George Campus will open the Nickel Independent Film and Video Festival in St. John’s on July 5.

Canadian Culinary Competition
Gerry Crewe, Commercial Cooking instructor at St. John’s Campus, attended the Canadian Culinary Convention in Edmonton on June 9, taking second place in the Canadian Chef of the Year category. This comes after Chef Crewe was recognized at the Atlantic Culinary Competition where he was awarded Chef of the Year for the provincial and regional selections.
Award of Excellence
Joe Bouzanne, Business Accounting instructor at Grand Falls-Windsor Campus was awarded Excellence in Human Resources Award at the Atlantic Human resources.
Research Published
Dr. Auruun Arunachalam, Physics instructor at Burin Campus will have his research work titled Application of Dimensional Analysis to Estimation of Ice-Induced Pressures on Rigid Vertical Structures published in the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering this October.
Alumnus to Launch CD
Darrin Martin is a talented musician, songwriter and performer, and we’re proud to say he’s a graduate of CNA, Bay St. George campus in three programs: Visual Arts, Music Industry and Performance and Recording Arts. Darrin provided the fabulous entertainment at the Alumni Association event on Feb. 3 and he’s been busy preparing to release his first CD. Framing for Food
From February 1-21, Décor Framing & Gallery, in the Village Mall St. John’s, will host their first annual custom framing food drive . . . FRAMING FOR FOOD 2005. They will be accepting non-perishable food items for the Community Food Sharing Association and in appreciation for their donation, customers will receive a credit of 1%, for every item they bring in off their custom framing purchase – up to 30% of the value of their order. For example, bring in 15 food items and get a 15% discount or bring in 30 food items and get a whopping 30% discount. A similar offer will be extended to other in-store specials, however some restrictions do apply.
