What is it?

College of the North Atlantic is offering a new and exciting Pre-Orientation Wilderness Leadership Experience! The Pre-Orientation Wilderness Leadership Experience program uses a wilderness environment to introduce students to a variety of skills and attitudes that will help prepare them for college life where no previous experience is required!

The program is designed to help students to make connections with their peers, develop leadership skills such as communication, problem-solving and personal reflection habits in a rugged wilderness environment.  It has been noted that wilderness experiences can provide a solid foundation for success in personal, academic and professional realms due to the direct transferability of skills and attitudes that are required to travel comfortably and safely.  Pre-Orientation Wilderness Leadership Experiences can provide new students with opportunity to develop strengths and characteristics critical to being successful in college such as:
  1. To provide students with a fun, safe, and memorable experience in a remote wilderness setting during the pre-orientation phase of orientation.
  2. To provide students with opportunities for leadership development through Leader of the Day activities.
  3. To provide opportunities for students to demonstrate outdoor safety through group decision making and teamwork.
  4. To educate students on expedition behaviour and how it can be transferred to real life circumstances.
  5. To provide opportunities for students to develop as a group through education of group development principles.
  6. To provide students with opportunities to develop a wilderness safety ethic for future outings.
  7. To provide students with the opportunity to develop critical life skills such as self-reliance, accountability, communication, leadership and self-efficacy.
  8. To provide a safe atmosphere for students to engage in social development activities.

Participants celebrate the completion of their pre-orientation wilderness leadership backpacking experience with a group photo at the Green Gardens trailhead.
This year we will take on some of Gros Morne National Park’s most beautiful and rugged coastline, the Green Gardens Trail during a three day back-packing adventure.

Students will meet at the Corner Brook Campus one day before the program and will spend one night in a local hotel and will depart the following morning for Gros Morne National Park.  Prior to the backpacking adventure we will spend one day in Lomond Campground getting acquainted with all the gear and equipment.  This day will also include a number of ice-breaker activities, a short hike and a group meal!

"The pre-orientation wilderness expedition was one of the best experiences I've had to date. It provided with new team and leadership experiences as well as lifelong friends. It allowed me to learn many new things about myself and it challenged me mentally and physically. No words can describe how thankful I am to have been given this amazing opportunity"

When is it?

N.F. -PROWLE Participant

"As someone with social anxiety going into a situation that had me camping with complete strangers for three nights, I can honestly say we all became friends so quickly and it definitely helped me be more social when college started and I'm definitely most likely to be yelling answers out in class and communicating with my instructors."
