College of the North Atlantic (CNA) and Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador Inc. announced today the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement. The agreement, announced at CNA’s Prince Philip Drive campus, will further the development of affordable home ownership for lower income, working families in this province.
The two-year agreement outlines processes where the resources of each organization will collaborate on specifically agreed projects. The agreement will also provide opportunities for the enhancement and enrichment of CNA student learning experiences, offering development opportunities for students to contribute to, and become stewards of the communities in which they live and work.
“The significance of this agreement will be felt throughout the province,” said CNA President and CEO, Ann Marie Vaughan. “This is a unique opportunity for the college and its students to give back to the communities that we reside in. We have had a great working relationship with Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador for a number of years, and we are delighted that a formal Memorandum of Agreement was put in place so we may continue this mutually beneficial relationship for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Home builds and renovations will provide an opportunity for the development of technical and practical skills and hands-on training opportunities for CNA students, as well as the transfer of construction and build skills to other community volunteers and family partners working on builds.
“The agreement is an investment that builds on our existing relationship, and unites the strengths of both Habitat NL and College of the North Atlantic,” said Kim Todd, Interim Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador. “It will be instrumental to furthering Habitat’s mission of helping families achieve home ownership, and reap the benefits of financial stability, improving educational outcomes, and improving health.”
The agreement will be promoted to all of CNA’s programs, and where best suited the programs will become involved in specific projects. These programs will include, but are not limited to, Plumbing, Business Management, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Construction/Industrial Electrician, Renovation Technician, Geomatics/Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology and Architectural Engineering Technology.
CNA and HFHNL will continue to work together on specific projects to raise awareness for the need of affordable housing and community building throughout the province.
