College of the North Atlantic presented with Employer of Distinction award

College of the North Atlantic (CNA) was presented today with an Employer of Distinction award at the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council (NLEC) annual Employers of Distinction luncheon held at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s. College of the North Atlantic (CNA) was presented today with an Employer of Distinction award at the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council (NLEC) annual Employers of Distinction luncheon held at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.
The award recognizes the college as a successful employer in Newfoundland and Labrador who demonstrates leadership in the community, productivity and innovation, and a fundamental belief in the value of a healthy, safe and motivated workforce.
“We are honoured to be presented with this award and want to thank the NLEC for recognizing the concerted effort that College of the North Atlantic and its employees put into offering world-class training opportunities to the residents of this province,” said CNA President and CEO, Ann Marie Vaughan. “Our strategic alignment with industry, both for curriculum development to suit future needs, and for anticipation of broad trends related to the labour market, is a critical relationship that we value. We also believe the significant initiatives we have in place throughout the year to address the health and wellbeing of our employees and students through a focus on physical and mental health, provides an environment that is conducive to working and learning.”
The nomination process for the award includes judging in five categories: Workplace & Atmosphere, Health & Safety Practices, Community Presence, Productivity & Innovation, and Corporate Responsibility.
College of the North Atlantic had a very successful 2015. Most notably the institution was able to increase overall enrollment by 8.3 per cent, marking the third straight year the college has experienced an increase in the number of students attending its programs. The college also introduced a number of new program offerings – including an online Journalism post-diploma (and a related course in drone journalism), a new two-year Electronic Engineering Systems Technology (Co-op) program, and a new one-year advanced diploma in Environmental Engineering Technology.
From a recognition standpoint, the college was presented with two Awards of Excellence from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) in 2015, for Program Excellence and Teaching Excellence. CICan is the national body representing public colleges in the Canada and these are the highest awards given out in the industry. There are only five awards given annually, one per category, and it is rare for one college to receive two awards in a given year.
“We have had a very prosperous year and it all stems from the work being done by our staff and faculty members each and every day,” said President Vaughan. “We continue to develop and foster an organizational culture which addresses our most significant values. As the province’s public college system, this contributes to our generally open and collaborative culture, which enables us to strive for excellence as professionals, as service providers and as team members.”
