College of the North Atlantic’s Bonavista campus is offering a compressed tourism certificate program catering to people who want to find work in the tourism industry, or for those already working who want to upgrade their skills.

According to Campus Manager Jamie Best, the seven-month Tourism & Hospitality Services certificate program focuses on tourism knowledge and the core skills and characteristics of the accommodations and food and beverage industries, while the practical and experiential learning nature of the program provides "real world" work experience.

“In response to the growing demand for workers in the Tourism and Hospitality industry, the Bonavista campus worked with operators, perspective students and stakeholders on the Bonavista Peninsula to offer a pilot of the seven-month Tourism & Hospitality Services certificate program beginning in October 2016 and running through May 2017,” said Best.

“The pilot delivery of this program in what is considered the ‘off-season’ and allows people employed in this industry to enroll and complete their training without losing time from work. This feature is attractive to both employers and students.”

Some of the core tourism courses within this program include hotel operations, customer service, Newfoundland and Labrador tourism destinations, tourism and technology, dining room operations, bar and beverage operations and tourism and the arts. Graduates will also complete professional certification for the National Food Safety Training Program, responsible alcohol service, World Host Fundamentals, First Aid and back injury prevention.
