ST. JOHN’S, NL – Waiting to hear one’s name called from the podium at an awards show can be nerve-wracking, but for College of the North Atlantic (CNA) graduates, it was a seven-time celebration during the Music Newfoundland and Labrador (MusicNL) Awards in St. John’s last weekend.
CNA had contenders vying for 11 MusicNL Awards this year. Topping the list was second-year Music: Performance, Business & Technology student Jacob Cherwick of Kubasonics, which swept away the trophies for all of their nominations, taking home awards for Group of the Year, Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, and the only award decided by public voting, Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year.
Town House, which includes Sound Recording & Production graduate Michael Dray, was one of two winners of the Rising Star of the Year, while CNA Music: Performance, Business & Technology graduate Kellie Loder’s video for her single Boxes won Music Video of the Year.
Two Graphic Design alumni also brought home awards this year: Krista Power won Graphic Artist of the Year, and Don-e Coady of DC Design House was awarded Volunteer of the Year.
CNA students and alumni weren’t the only ones recognized for their artistry. Faculty members have also lent their talents to the music industry. Music: Performance, Business & Technology instructor Wade Pinhorn can be heard on the recording for Loder’s
Boxes as a bass player and on Earle and Coffin’s recording as a keyboardist, which won for Best Jazz/Blues Artist of the Year. Meanwhile, Power is a former instructional assistant with the Graphic Design program located at the Prince Philip Drive campus.
“Congratulations to all MusicNL Award winners and to MusicNL on its 25th anniversary of celebrating the phenomenal musical and artistic talents within the province,” said Brenda Tobin, Dean of Academics, Applied Arts & Tourism.
“I extend special words of congratulations to our Applied Arts students, graduates and faculty, of whom we are so very proud. They have worked so hard to reach a goal, such as this one, and they are to be commended on their outstanding achievement of excellence that will be with them for a lifetime. They are amazing and so well-deserving of these prestigious awards. We are so very delighted for each and every one of them.”
