CNA dominates provincial skills competition

The 9th Annual Provincial Skills Canada Competition was held Friday, March 24, in St. John’s, with a very strong showing from College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students. CNA’s entrants competed in 20 post-secondary competition categories, and walked away with 30 medals, including 11 gold.

The Gold medal winners now comprise Team Newfoundland and Labrador and will travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia to participate in the 12th annual Canadian Skills Competition, from May 23 to 26. The event will be hosted at the Halifax Metro and World Trade Centre.

The provincial and national skills competitions are Olympic-style competitions which showcase students' technical and leadership skills. Students participate in practical challenges designed to test skills required in technology and trade occupations.

CNA’s Gold medal winners include: Candace Cheney, Prince Philip Drive – Baking; Edward Decker, Ridge Road – Refrigeration; Brad Coish, Ridge Road – Architectural Design; Paul Duffet, Prince Philip Drive – Autobody Repair; Jason Hopkins, Prince Philip Drive – Welding; Geri Coady, Prince Philip Drive – Graphic Design; Steve Wilcott, Ridge Road – Electronics; Shawn Edwards, Prince Philip Drive – IT and Network Support; Krista King, Prince Philip Drive – IT Software Applications; Renee Thibeau, Bay St. George – Culinary Arts; Bobby Meade, Seal Cove – Automation and Control.

Winning silver are: Tracy Crocker, Gander – Hairstyling; Dale Burt, Happy Valley-Goose Bay – Industrial Millwright Mechanic; Matt Mills, Ridge Road – Architectural Design; Chris Petten, Seal Cove – Electrical Wiring; Mike Mitchell, Bay St. George – Automotive Service; Blaine Clarke, Prince Philip Drive – Autobody Repair; Janelle Legge, Burin – Welding; Bob Kent, Ridge Road – Mechanical Design; Mark Bennett, Prince Philip Drive – Graphic Design; Jordon Woodfine, Prince Philip Drive – Internet Web Design; Craig Bennett, Burin – Electronics.
