CNA students claim five medals at Skills Canada National Competition

The gold-medal winners from the Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Competitions traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia last week to attend the Skills Canada National Competition and they made sure they didn’t walk away empty-handed.
Post-secondary students and apprentices in skilled trades and technologies competed for a spot on the podium in fields such as carpentry, welding, graphic design and aesthetics. Of the 11 medals awarded to Team Newfoundland and Labrador, five were presented to College of the North Atlantic (CNA) students.
Jessica Meyer and Brian Forward of Prince Philip Drive campus claimed gold medals for the Graphic Design and IT Network Systems Administration categories.
David Stacey of Ridge Road campus scored a bronze medal for Electronics, Greg Martin of Ridge Road campus brought home a bronze for Architectural Technology and Design, and Justin Willcott of Prince Philip Drive campus took bronze for Website Design.
Forty-eight competitors from the province made up Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2013. Of those 48 competitors, 23 were from CNA.
“CNA was proudly represented at the Skills Canada National Competition last week,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, CNA’s President and CEO. “I am very proud of our students and am extremely pleased with their showing at the national competition. I want to congratulate each of them and their instructors for the hard work they have put in to reach these milestones.”
“I am thrilled for of all our competitors, and in particular those from CNA,” said John Oates, President of Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador and Lead Campus Administrator of CNA’s Prince Philip Drive campus. “They were excellent ambassadors for the province and the college. Bringing home five medals from the National Competition, including two gold medals, is such a fantastic accomplishment. I’d also like to thank our coaches and mentors for all their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to everyone.”
Carole Ann Ryan, Executive Director of Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador, says Team NL 2013 reinforced the positive reputation the province has earned at previous competitions as a very talented group of young people with exceptional futures. They are a great reflection of the training and education they receive in the province.
“We couldn't be more proud of our team's performance at the Skills Canada National Competition,” said Ryan. “We were delighted to have representation on our team from 23 students/apprentices from CNA; these competitors were focussed, determined and demonstrated a high level of skill and professionalism.”
The Skills Canada National Competition was held from June 5-8 in Vancouver, British Columbia and brought together over 500 young people from all provinces and territories to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. The main goals of the competition are to provide competitors with hands-on work experience while raising awareness of the value of careers in skilled trades and technologies.
