Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (ACOA), today announced funding of more than $1 million for three projects with College of the North Atlantic (CNA) to enhance its programming, training capability and outreach capacity, which will benefit the province’s tourism and manufacturing sectors.
An investment of $112,910 at the Bonavista campus will enable the Bonavista Institute for Cultural Tourism to continue delivering executive-level training programs and courses in destination development and culinary tourism for tourism operators and cultural providers, which is helping to strengthen the cultural tourism industry in the province.
Funding of $462,859 for a project at the Port aux Basques campus will enable the college to introduce new technologies and equipment to improve CNA’s training capabilities in its Non-Destructive Testing program, which is a key element of quality assurance in the manufacturing sector.
In St. John’s, $469,500 is being invested in the Prince Philip Drive campus to undertake an industry engagement project through CNA’s Manufacturing Technology Centre to enhance its provincial outreach capacity and support services for small and medium-sized enterprises in the manufacturing and processing sectors, which will help boost their business growth and competitiveness. This initiative also includes the purchase of innovative equipment and facility upgrades.

· The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, is investing a total of $1,045,269 for three CNA projects: Bonavista, $112,910; Port aux Basques, $462,859; St. John’s, $469,500.
· CNA is Newfoundland and Labrador’s public college institution and one of the largest providers of post-secondary education and skills training in Atlantic Canada. The college, which operates 17 campuses throughout the province and a technical college in the Middle East for the State of Qatar, offers close to 100 full-time programs and more than 300 part-time courses for approximately 25,000 students in Newfoundland and Labrador each year.
· The Bonavista Institute for Cultural Tourism is CNA’s centre of excellence for cultural tourism training in Atlantic Canada, with programming focused on destination development and culinary excellence.
· CNA’s Port aux Basques campus is the only training facility in Atlantic Canada that offers Non-Destructive Testing programs. This project will allow the college to address the shortage of non-destructive testing workers in the industry by training more students to meet the need.
· The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) allows the province’s manufacturers and entrepreneurs to access CNA’s applied research and advanced technological capabilities. Working closely with industry, the MTC is a strong player in research and development of manufacturing technology in the province.
