CNA students travel to Vancouver for Skills Canada National Competition

The gold-medal winners from the Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Competitions will travel to Vancouver, British Columbia on June 4 to attend the Skills Canada National Competition.
Post-secondary students and apprentices in skilled trades and technologies will vie for gold, silver and bronze medals in fields such as carpentry, welding, graphic design and aesthetics while high school students will also compete in trade, technology and employability skill areas such as job interview and public speaking.
Forty-eight competitors from the province, along with technical experts, volunteers and staff will make up Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2013. Of those 48 competitors attending, 23 are from College of the North Atlantic.
Those attending include; Megan Cochrane for Baking and Stephen Leamon for the Electrical Installations category from the Seal Cove campus; Kimberlee Golder from Bay St. George campus for Hairstyling; and David Stacey for Electronics, Greg Martin for Architectural Technology and Design; Jason Fong and Nathan Stone for Mechatronics and Nicola Ryan for Refrigeration/Air Conditioning from Ridge Road campus.
Representing Port aux Basques campus is Boyde Auchinleck for Cabinetmaking while Chantille Prince-Stagg will represent Bonavista for IT Software Solutions for Business; Cory Norman will represent Happy Valley-Goose Bay for Heavy Equipment Service Technician; Jonathan Kelly of Burin campus for Sheet Metal; and Gavin Diamond of Placentia for Precision machining.
Attending from Prince Philip Drive campus are Brittany Piercey for Culinary Arts; Evan Cox for Automotive Service; Cody Alyward for Autobody Repair; Brian Butler for Car Painting; Robin Eddy for Welding; Matthew Fudge for Mechanical CADD; Jessica Meyer for Graphic Design; Justin Willcott for Website Design; Adam Roberts for Print Media Technology; and Brian Forward for IT Network Systems Administration.

The Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver, British Columbia from June 5-8 will bring together over 500 young people from all provinces and territories to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. The main goals of this competition are to provide competitors with hands-on work experience while raising awareness of the value of careers in skilled trades and technologies.
The 2013 Skills Canada National Competition is the 19th annual instalment of this prestigious event and in past years competitors from Newfoundland and Labrador have performed extremely well. The awards ceremony will be held 5:30 p.m., June 8 and will be broadcasted live from the PNE Forum in Vancouver on www.skillscanada.com.
