This program is a 39 week program which will prepare students for careers as marine cooks, working in an offshore environment. Students are required to complete all aspects of the course curriculum as well as the Marine Emergency Duties (MED) segment, and a 28-day work term (sea-time) which involves working in the galley of an offshore commercial vessel. This program is designed to meet the ever-growing demand for professionals within the food service industry, with an emphasis on the offshore environment.

Entrance Requirements 
Applicants must possess one of the following:
  • Provincial high school completion (or equivalent)
  • Grade XI public examination pass (or equivalent)
  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) graduation certificate
  • Persons 19 years of age or older who do not meet the educational prerequisites for this program may be considered on an individual basis under the Mature Student Clause
Funding
Funding for this program may be available through Canada Student Loans or other funding agencies.

Application Process 
Interested parties are required to fill out and submit a full-time application form along with pertinent educational information to the Leaner Services Department at Gander Campus.

Program of Studies 
Students who successfully complete all the requirements of the course can qualify for the following documents:
  • Certificate in Marine Cooking: College of the North Atlantic
  • Ship's Cook Certificate of Qualifications: Ministry of Transport, Government of Canada
  • National Sanitation Training Certificate: Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Certificate: Ministry of Transport, Government of Canada
    • MED Includes: Basic Safety STCW 95 (6 days)
    • Marine First Aid Advanced (2 days)
  • Ministry of Transport Canadian Seaman's Log Book, Cooking: Ministry of Transport, Government of Canada
Special Notes:
  • A valid seafarer’s medical is required for some of the certificates listed above - Medical must be performed by a physician approved by OSSC, M.I. (list available upon request). Both a Seafarer (Marine) Medical and Marine Institute medical are required.
  • Passports are required for work-term at sea.
  • Alcohol and drug testing will be required for work-term at sea.
Program Costs:

This program is outside the regular CNA core programming and is offered on a cost recovery basis. A minimum number of registrants must be met in order to proceed with the program. For more information please contact the person(s) listed below.
