Journalism via Online/Distance Learning
I’ve always dreamed of being a journalist...
Students will be part of a student news team in a virtual newsroom. Thanks to the mobile and digital revolutions, you are no longer limited by technology – only by the degree of your passion for journalism.
but I can’t afford to move away from home to study in a different community
but I have family responsibilities
but I work full-time
No more buts.
As digital technology has opened a world of possibilities for journalists, it can now tear down the obstacles that have stood between you and your dream career.
Starting in September 2015, College of the North Atlantic will offer a one-year (12 courses) online program in journalism to university and college graduates.
The distance program will use the college’s online platform to deliver courses covering core journalism skills: ethics and law, audio storytelling, video storytelling, news photography and online journalism. Students will be part of a student news team in a virtual newsroom and will also complete internships with professional news organizations.
There are many advantages to the online journalism program at CNA:
You can study from your home town, province or even country. You won’t have the expense of travelling to another location and paying for accommodations there.
You can continue to work while studying. You will not have to attend a physical class at a specified time.
You can choose to complete the course full-time in one academic year (September-June) or part-time over two or more years.
The college will offer a program that is flexible and accessible while maintaining high standards. Our online learning technology will allow online students to interact with instructors and other students both for real-time projects and activities that can be completed at the learner’s individual pace.
As the late, great David Carr of the New York Times noted, today's journalists have more "journalistic firepower" in their backpacks than entire news organizations had 30 years ago. Thanks to the mobile and digital revolutions, you are no longer limited by technology – only by the degree of your passion for journalism.

"I think this is an amazing program. I wish more people knew about it. What I like the most is that it’s so hands-on and we get to actually do things every week.
I think we’re more prepared for the job market because of that.
Another thing that I really like is that we have really small groups in class, so they (the instructors) get a chance to teach us individually and find out what we really need.
They teach us what we need for the curriculum but also give us really good career advice, and I feel that they really care about our learning here."

Journalism program on
"From the first day, you will be treated like a journalist, not like a freshman.
You will write for the college newspaper, organize your own radio shows, shoot TV news and engage yourself in photojournalism.
It's definitely your program if you want to feel what the real taste of journalism is. . .
The program doesn’t only give you the theoretical basis of journalism; it makes you feel and act like a real journalist – with all the responsibilities, hard times and deadlines.
It gives you the taste of working in a real newsroom and prepares you for the real world."
