Salary Information

Salary will be determined in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, based on the candidate's education and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

College of the North Atlantic continues to advance its key position within the natural resource sectors, particularly the extractive industries. This work will support the broader project goal of developing highly qualified personnel (HQP) in Newfoundland and Labrador and ensuring that education and training systems are well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of the extractive sector during the energy transition.

Under the supervision of the Director of Industry Innovation the Faculty Researcher will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of existing CNA programs in mining, engineering technology, and related trades, with a focus on relevance to the evolving needs of the extractive industries.
  • Benchmark national and international models for training and credentialing in mining engineering and energy transition skills.
  • Identify gaps and propose program enhancements that incorporate digital technologies (AI, data analytics, digital twins), sustainability, and transferable skills between oil and gas and mining.
  • Develop recommendations for new micro-credentials, diplomas, or laddering pathways to support training at various levels across the sector.
  • Examine innovative instructional models to address the well-known challenge of attracting and retaining qualified instructors in high-demand technical fields. This includes exploring hybrid industry/academic roles, secondments from industry, adjunct networks, and remote or modular delivery models.
  • Undertake environmental, strategic, and jurisdictional scans of emerging technologies, research capabilities, and commercial service models to identify opportunities to differentiate capabilities nationally and internationally.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field such as natural resources, education, economics, public policy, workforce development, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • Experience conducting applied research, environmental or jurisdictional scans, literature reviews, policy/program analysis, or comparable research activities.
  • Research experience relevant to, mining, oil and gas, energy, engineering, natural resources, or related industrial sectors.
  • Experience conducting applied research, environmental or jurisdictional scans, literature reviews, policy/program analysis, or comparable research activities.

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of applied research methods, processes, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and developments across mining, oil and gas, energy, and other natural resource sectors.
  • Knowledge of curriculum/program development, credentialing, micro-credentials, learning pathways, and industry-aligned training.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, research opportunities, innovative instructional approaches, and strategic opportunities for CNA.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical and research information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage time and resources to meet priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to critically assess evidence, synthesize findings, and draw informed conclusions to support decision-making.
  • Ability to develop professional partnerships with various stakeholders.
