Stef Janes

Winner of the 2019 Dream Trip Contest.

winner1

It’s unbelievably perfect timing. We’ve never needed a vacation more than we do now.

For CNA alumna Stef Janes, the countdown is on to tick off items on her bucket list.

Imagine sleeping over the water; swimming in the ocean off a private balcony every morning; snorkeling amongst the colourful fish; and, having a cold, tropical cocktail while watching the sharks, stingrays and sea turtles swim past her bungalow every evening.

Last spring, Stef was the winner College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) $10,000 dream vacation through the college’s annual Alumni Reconnect contest. Her upcoming trip will see her board a plane on April 15, 2020 for considerably warmer climes than those found in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Where will her dream trip take her? To the Maldives, a small island nation in South Asia which is located in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean.

“An over water bungalow in the Maldives is pretty much the top of my bucket list, and with one kid in post-secondary and another one heading out soon, this is not a vacation I would have been able to afford in the near future!” said the 2018 graduate.

“It’s a dream come true,” Stef said. “I think surreal would be the best way to describe it. I can’t believe that it happened. I have never won anything before so I must have been saving up all of my luck for a good one. I entered the contest the year before since I only graduated from CNA’s Community Studies program in 2018, but it looks like the second time is a charm.”

“It’s unbelievably perfect timing. We’ve never needed a vacation more than we do now,” Stef says.

“When I went back to school, my husband had to sacrifice a lot; the financial burden was fully on him and our budget no longer allowed for travel, so it’s nice that we now get to take this trip together. It’s funny that because I went back to school, we couldn’t afford to go anywhere, but because I went back to school, we won this crazy trip that we normally couldn’t afford to go on.”

One thing that is definitely on their list – exploring. However, the couple will wait until they arrive at their destination to choose what excursions they’ll try.

“I want to go snorkeling with turtles and swimming with the sharks, but the rest will be something I decide on when I get there. As for what I’m looking forward to the most, the warmth, the food, the over-the-water bungalow, the beach … I can’t choose just one!”

Sarah Johnstone

Winner of the 2018 Create a Vacation Contest.

winner2

We travelled to San Jose, Monteverde, Arenal, Guanacaste, and Tortuguero – some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica. Guanacaste was my favourite; I loved the gorgeous beaches and amazing sunsets.

Sarah Johnstone is still daydreaming about her recent pura vida (meaning pure or simple life) Costa Rica adventure.

The College of the North Atlantic (CNA) alumna was the winner of the 2018 Reconnect Alumni contest and chose to travel to a region that was surrounded by lush greenery, farm-to-table restaurants, majestic volcanoes, misty cloud forests, stunning river valleys and hundreds of beaches.

Johnstone quickly discovered that pura vida was more than just a saying — it is a way of life.

Costa Rica is a Spanish-speaking paradise between Mexico and South America that is surrounded by water, with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.

Johnstone, a 2013 graduate of CNA’s Business Management (Human Resource Management) program, carefully selected her destination – valued at C$10,000. The entire trip was made possible through CNA’s partnership with TD Insurance, Travel Professionals International (TPI) and Collette Tours.

Johnstone is currently working as an accounting representative with Munn Insurance. She saw the contest advertisement on Facebook when it was shared by her former CNA classmates several times and it caught her attention.

This trip couldn’t have come at a better time for the Mount Pearl native, and quickly became extra special as she and her boyfriend could check off a few bucket list items.

“We travelled to San Jose, Monteverde, Arenal, Guanacaste, and Tortuguero – some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica,” said Johnstone. “Guanacaste was my favourite; I loved the gorgeous beaches and amazing sunsets.”

Treehouse Cafe was another highlight of her vacation.

This is one of the breathtaking restaurants built around a tree in Monteverde,” Johnstone described.

It is famous for its coffee, craft beers and cocktails. The food included everything from the local dish Gallo Pinto, (cooked rice and beans fried together) to Latin American-, Peruvian- and Mexican-inspired cuisine.

We will cherish these memories forever. I’m thankful to everyone at CNA for this amazing gift!

The CNA graduate said she was also very excited to explore the most famous and distinctive ecosystems of Costa Rica, while ziplining from treetop platforms via cables that stretched approximately 180 metres above the forest floor. Also amazing were eight suspended bridges that ranged between 150-510 feet in length and 36-180 feet high.

Johnstone joked that the country is small, but it left a big impression that made saying good-bye difficult. She highly recommends the trip and is very thankful to the contest for an amazing experience.

“Collette Tours enabled us to enjoy all that Costa Rica has to offer without any of the stress of travel and planning,” she said. “We will cherish these memories forever. I’m thankful to everyone at CNA for this amazing gift!”

Chante Goodyear

Winner of the 2017 Trip to New York Contest.

winner3

The New York trip was a good break. I never got to do a whole lot this summer so it was really exciting to go somewhere and do a lot of stuff.

Time Square, the Empire State Building and a Broadway show are just a few of the sights and experiences CNA alumna Chante Goodyear took in during her recent trip to the Big Apple.

Chante was the grand prize winner of a trip to New York as part of College of the North Atlantic’s Alumni Reconnect contest in December 2016. The trip couldn’t have come at a better time for the Grand Falls-Windsor native, who said she needed a break after a hectic summer of working.

“The New York trip was a good break. I never got to do a whole lot this summer so it was really exciting to go somewhere and do a lot of stuff. We were down there for five days and it was jammed-packed the whole time, but it was nice because I got to do everything I wanted. I got to do things I had wanted to do (on my last trip) but didn’t get to do.”

What made it even more special was the adventure south of the border became a family affair for the Goodyear clan, as Chante’s mother, sister and grandmother came along to make it a girl’s trip.

Instead of visiting the Statue of Liberty again, they opted for a boat tour around the island.

“I was in New York a few years ago and it was awesome, so when I got the call (about winning the contest) I was even more excited because I love it there,” Chante said. “I had a great time. I got to do things I never got to do on my last trip like the Empire State Building and a Manhattan night cruise, which was beautiful. It was a two-hour cruise and you saw a lot of the island. It started at 7 p.m. so it was kind of daylight out and the tour ended at night time, so the lights were lit up.”

They also took in the Broadway show that everyone has been raving about.

We went to a few street shows and we got to see Come From Away. That was the best Broadway show I have seen so far. It was an hour and a half long and it felt like half an hour. I could relate to it so much, I guess, because I’m from Newfoundland. It was a great show. I would recommend it to anyone. It was awesome.

Chante is a graduate of the college’s Comprehensive Arts and Science: University Transfer program and a current student at Memorial University in St. John’s. The Alumni Reconnect prize, valued at $3,500, was held in partnership with TD Insurance Meloche Monnex.
