Duties and Responsibilities
College of the North Atlantic (CNA) continues to advance its applied research and development capacity through partnerships with industry, using hyperspectral imaging, gamma ray spectroscopy, XRF, and related technologies to support the natural resources sector in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada.
To support its expanding work in critical and strategic minerals, CNA's Office of Applied Research and Innovation is looking to hire an experienced Faculty Researcher - Natural Resources (Applied Geoscience - Data Integration). The successful candidate will bring a strong applied geoscience background, including expertise in mineral systems, Northeastern Appalachian geology, and experience with Newfoundland and Labrador mineral deposits. This role involves leading applied research across the mining lifecycle, integrating multidisciplinary geoscience data using advanced analysis and 3D modelling, work collaboratively with industry, government, and research partners to deliver applied research outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of Industry Innovation the Faculty Researcher will:
- Act as the geoscience subject matter expert for the Hyperspectral Imaging team and related research groups.
- Lead the design and development of applied mineral exploration approaches, with a focus on critical and strategic minerals in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Analyze and integrate diverse mineralogical and petrophysical datasets, including hyperspectral, gamma ray, X-Ray Fluorescence, and related data, to develop robust geological models and applications.
- Ensure research outputs are practical, scalable, and aligned with industry workflows, supporting effective and innovative exploration strategies.
- Collaborate with internal research teams, industry partners, and government agencies to establish and maintain applied research partnerships
- Contribute to the identification, development, and execution of applied research projects within the mining and mineral exploration sector.
- Support the development of research funding proposals, including technical content and supporting documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to researchers, staff, and students involved in applied research activities.
- Contribute to project reporting, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement of research activities.
- Other related duties as required.
Screening Criteria
- Graduate degree in geological sciences, applied geology or a related field (equivalencies will be considered).
- Experience applying advanced geoscience or mineralogical technologies (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, gamma ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence) in mineral exploration or applied research projects.
- Experience leading applied geoscience or applied geology research or project initiatives in collaboration with industry partners.
- Experience contributing to or preparing technical documentation in compliance with mineral resource regulatory reporting standards (e.g., NI 43-101 or comparable frameworks).
Assessment Criteria
- Knowledge of applied research practices and the development of industry-focused solutions.
- Knowledge of geoscience principles and mineral exploration methods used in the exploration of critical and strategic minerals.
- Knowledge of geological and geophysical data sources and analysis methods for mineral exploration.

- Ability to communicate complex technical and research information clearly to diverse audiences.
