CG24 - $42,442.40 - $46,737.60 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

The Trades Worker I is responsible for maintenance, repair and troubleshooting work near the apprentice level in the building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical trades to ensure efficient operation at College of the North Atlantic's Prince Philip Drive campus:

• Constructs, repairs, and maintains offices, doors, windows, glass, locks, and office furnishings, including desks, bookcases, and shelving.
• Applies plaster and paint to a variety of interior and exterior wall surfaces.
• Lays and replaces flooring materials, including commercial vinyl, laminate, and vinyl baseboards.
• Carries out minor electrical maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
• Installs surveillance cameras, associated data cabling, surface-mounted conduit, and junction boxes.
• Performs masonry work, including the repair, replacement, and installation of brick, concrete block, paving stones, ceramic floor tile, and wall tile.
• Completes small- to medium-scale renovation and construction projects to support new and evolving College programs and operational requirements.
• Safely operates a variety of power tools and equipment, including table saws, circular saws, and electric drills.
• Completes work orders, prepares building supply requests, and delivers materials to designated campus locations.
• Ensures all maintenance and renovation activities are completed in accordance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements.
• Operates a forklift on an occasional basis.
• Conducts annual inspections and preventative maintenance on building components and various pieces of equipment, as required.
  
   

Screening Criteria

• Completion of High School supplemented by courses in a trade from a post-secondary institution or completion of a registered Trades Apprentice. 
• Experience performing building maintenance, renovations, repairs, or general trades work in one or more of the following areas: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical, or related building maintenance functions.
• An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

Assessment Criteria

• Knowledge of carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and electrical trades, including accepted trade practices, codes, and related safety issues.
• Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS).
• Ability to effectively exchange information.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing priorities.
• Professionalism.
• Interpersonal skills.

Conditions of Offer

• When requested by the Employer, a recent and satisfactory Certificate of Conduct must be provided. 
• Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 License.
• Verification of credentials and applicable licenses, certifications, and/or professional memberships as required for the position. 

Conditions of Acceptance

• Lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs., is required occasionally for such tasks as carrying gyprock, moving furniture, lifting materials and toolboxes.
• Required to stand, walk, drive and climb for extended periods of time during work activities to bring materials to sites and to climb ladders to do repairs.
• Work at heights and will be required to complete fall arrest training and recertification.
• Requirement to obtain and maintain Forklift Certification.
• Travel to various campuses within NL to preform duties. This will require overnight stay, at times extending for a full working week duration.
