STEPHENVILLE, NL — College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Digital Filmmaking program has produced a stunning short film incorporating Newfoundland recitations as a tribute to Memorial University’s (MUN) Folklore at 50 – a celebration marking 50 years of folklore education at the university.

The world premiere of I Dare Say is Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Arts & Culture Centre in Stephenville. I Dare Say includes recitations and stories of the island of Newfoundland, cleverly crafted together by student Andrew Pike, directed by John McKinnon, and produced by both the first- and second-year Digital Filmmaking students.

The film follows a family of siblings (played by Austin Card, Randy Burt and Leahdawn Hiscock) as they reunite for their father’s funeral. From there, recitations come to life as the trio relive some family history.

Every year CNA’s Digital Filmmaking program strives to celebrate the rich culture of Newfoundland and Labrador through the production of intercession films. The program’s intercession is an on-campus work term in which students work closely with their instructors and industry professionals to produce a short film.
College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Digital Filmmaking program has been busy producing a short film incorporating recitations and stories of the island of Newfoundland, as part of Memorial University’s (MUN) Folklore at 50 celebrations.

Digital Filmmaking instructor Peter Buckle says, “Every year we focus on one story from the Newfoundland and Labrador culture. However, this year – with MUN celebrating Folklore at 50 – our students decided to use multiple types of folklore to weave together a truly heartwarming story. The intercession film project is a huge milestone in the program, and our students have worked hard through all the stages of filmmaking, from pre-production to final delivery, along with our amazing cast, in bringing this film to the screen.”

The world premiere of I Dare Say is part of a full evening of entertainment at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre, including a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, performances by local storyteller Don Dunphy, and music by the Bay St. George Folk Arts Council.
