December 16, 2002 – Three students at Bay St. George campus have been presented with the campus’ new Humanitarian Award.

Lloyd Mushrow of Port aux Basques, Margaret Lewis of Fleur-De-Lys, and Karen Bennett of Stephenville, all students or graduates of programs at the campus, have each received a $300 scholarship for acts of kindness and humanity they exhibited during their time at CNA.

The award is a direct result of the events of September 11, 2001, when thousands of airline passengers were stranded in Newfoundland and Labrador as a result of diverted flights due to terrorist attacks in the US.

The award came about when, upon returning home, some passengers sent donations to the college campuses that housed, fed, and entertained them during their stay.

Two passengers that stayed at the Bay St. George campus – James Crane and Patricia Boyle – donated some $800 between them. The rest came from funds left in trust for miscellaneous use, says Sandra Lewis, member of the District 2 Scholarship & Awards Team. The team was inspired by the spirit of giving shown by individuals during last year’s events.

“We decided that it was appropriate to have a humanitarian award for students and recent graduates,” says Lewis.

“The students received this award for giving of themselves wholeheartedly for something or someone else.”

Eligible students must have demonstrated a “humanitarian spirit” in the past year, and have been nominated by fellow students or staff of the college.

Other new awards presented to students at the campus this year include the Business Administration Merit Scholarship valued at $300 and donated by Business Studies instructors; the East Coast Beauty Award valued at $100 and donated by East Coast Inc.; and the OBSCO Maritimes Award valued at $50, and given by OBSCO Maritimes Ltd.
