2019-2020 award winners see a total of nearly $450,000

STEPHENVILLE, NL – The COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial strain for many people in this country and around the world, including post-secondary learners.

Students at College of the North Atlantic (CNA) received some much-needed financial relief this year with hundreds of thousands of dollars distributed through the annual awards, scholarships, and bursaries program.

The program relies on the generosity of outside donors, including financial institutions, corporations, local businesses, families, and individuals. In November, a CNA Faculty and Staff Appeal program called Giving Makes Cents, was established through employee payroll contributions.

Campuses across the province presented a total of 521 annual awards and scholarships during the 2019-2020 academic year, totaling nearly $450,000.

“When faced with the uncertainty of the pandemic, CNA had to pivot,” explained Anna Peddle, Manager of CNA’s Office of Alumni and Advancement. “We worked hard to ensure that despite all the challenges, our students were supported, and that academic continuity remained a priority.”

She says they needed to find a new way to distribute and recognize students of the annual awards program.

“We’re very happy to report that students across all 17 campuses received their awards and were recognized for their hard work,” added Peddle.

CNA has been presenting scholarships and awards for more than 40 years and Peddle says the work of the Alumni and Advancement office, in conjunction with the local campuses, continues to thrive as new donors approach the college with their intent to recognize and reward student achievement, which has resulted in  long-lasting partnerships.

This has become particularly important this year with the added financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our donors remained engaged with the college throughout this trying time. Donors and students could not meet face-to-face, but their commitment to giving remained strong and the partnerships continued. We want to thank all our donors who were able to continue to support our students and we look forward to what the future holds.”
