CNA students win national awards

October 10, 2003 - A total of $37,000 in scholarships was recently awarded to several students attending College of the North Atlantic (CNA).
The Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Scholarship was awarded to both students recommended by the College.
Patricia Hillier from Deer Lake is currently enrolled in the Business Administration (Accounting II) program at Corner Brook campus, and Tonya King from Stephenville is enrolled in the second year of Community Studies at Bay St. George campus. Each received the national scholarship valued at $3,500.
The Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Scholarship Program was developed to promote and encourage academic excellence and the pursuit of higher education in Canada. The program is administered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), and selection is based upon financial need as well as strong scholarly competence.
Another national scholarship – The Millennium In-Course Excellence Award – was given to seven students at CNA.
Anne Collins from Coley’s Point, a second year Community Studies student at Carbonear campus, and Gillian Saunders, a second year Community Studies student from Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus, both received first-level standing from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. They were each awarded a scholarship valued at $5,000 in recognition from the national committee for demonstrating the qualities of academic excellence, leadership, and community service.
Five other recipients were each awarded $4,000 for second-level standing in the Millennium awards. Nancy Newman from Clarenville, a second year Business Administration student at Clarenville campus; Linsay Peddle from Harbour Grace, a second year Office Administration (Medical) student at Prince Philip Drive campus; Chantille Rodway from North Harbour, a second year Computer Support Specialist at Clarenville campus; Alan Squires, from St. John’s, a second year Programmer Analyst (Business) Co-op student at Prince Philip Drive campus; and Bonnita Vey from Hillview, a second year Business Administration (Accounting) student at Clarenville were all recognized for reaching a GPA of at least 3.3 or 80% in their respective program.
The Millennium In-course Excellence Award is the newest of the Canada Millennium Scholarships. It is designed to meet the needs of students already enrolled in post-secondary institutions who have not previously received major merit scholarships.
