Emergency planning, public safety and business continuity – these are realities organizations throughout the country are facing in today’s world. To meet this growing demand, College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is currently working to develop a post diploma program in Emergency Management.

Emergency management education is a growing field on every level; provincially, nationally and internationally. Various government departments, non-government agencies and members of industry are aware of the importance of prevention, preparedness and response in the event of an emergency.

A number of emergency events are partially, or totally, preventable through good planning and response. The CNA program will promote emergency management as an independent field of study alongside other college programs. Once developed, it will be offered through the School of Tourism and Natural Resources.

“The Emergency Management program will be a valuable addition to the School, which currently has related programs in Environmental Technology, Forest Resources Technician, Geographic Information Systems and also conducts courses in Environmental Impact Assessment and Forest Fire Management,” says CNA’s Dean of Tourism and Natural Resources, Brent Howell.

In conjunction with the development of the Emergency Management program, CNA representatives will also be exploring the potential for related applied research initiatives.

“Emergency managers and business continuity planners prepare for a variety of events. The introduction of this program will complement the skills and experiences that our students gain throughout their diploma programs. Graduates from a range of programs at other post-secondary institutions may also have an interest in pursuing this exciting new post-diploma program at CNA.”

Emergency managers require strong analytic and communication skills to help them establish meaningful communications with community representatives and experts in a variety of fields. Graduates of this unique program will be able to integrate large amounts of complex information and make sound decisions in challenging, and often difficult, circumstances.
