Stephenville, NL - After 15 years, students in College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Digital Filmmaking program are ready to show their most ambitious film to date,
RANGER ROCK. The film will premiere during the 15th Annual Final Film Festival at the Stephenville Cinema this Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m.
As a series of mysterious murders are paralyzing the town of Stephenville, will a retired superhero haunted by past mistakes come out of seclusion to help solve the case?
The Digital Filmmaking program’s yearly intercession film is a collaborative effort between first- and second-year students. Instructor Keith Bonnell said, “The intercession semester as it exists today really started back in 2011, when Peter Buckle joined the program as an instructor. Prior to 2011, we did have intercession films, but they weren’t all that ambitious. Peter envisioned that the students should be involved in the entire process right from the beginning and that everyone would be given a specific job to do, similar to how the industry works.”
Cameron Brake, a second-year student, added, “This intercession film was a unique one for the writing department, as a large writing team consisting of first- and second-year students all banded together as one.”
Graduates from years past have also been involved heavily in this year's production. Travis Lucas, who graduated in 2024, was brought on to direct. Lucas said, “Intersession was the most fun I had as a student, and now I not only get to be a part of it again, but I also get to direct and see a new wave of talented students go through it and enjoy it as much as I did. It's really something special!"
The Digital Filmmaking program has been leading the film scene in Western Newfoundland for even longer than 15 years by providing students with the resources and skills needed to create and produce their own works. Through the program, a new generation of filmmakers has emerged from the town of Stephenville.
The public is welcome to join the fun on June 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stephenville Cinema. In addition to the world premiere of
RANGER ROCK, the Film Festival is filled with short films, documentaries, work from CNA’s Digital Animation program and more.
