Plan for student life beyond the classroom

Newfoundland and Labrador also has many off-campus student housing options including renting a single room in an apartment or house, rental apartments, rental houses, and boarding houses (which often include meals). There are often apartments within walking distance of the College and a public bus service at many College campuses.

Students who would like to live off-campus can contact the campus they are attending for information regarding off-campus housing options. A list of some off-campus student housing can be found on each of our campus pages.

The Division of Student Services provides personal and academic counseling to all students of the College. Student tutoring and other learning resources are also available. The Student Council organizes various events and activities throughout the year.

Once on campus, the International Student Contact at your campus should be your first point of contact. This individual is sensitive to the special needs of international students and can assist or direct you to those who can help with:

• Assistance with accommodation search
• Orientation
• Monthly international events
• Sponsoring agencies, foreign governments, consulates, and embassies
• General advising and counseling for personal and financial concerns

All students at College of the North Atlantic have free access to the Internet and a wide variety of software. These resources are available through the College's many networked computer labs and facilities.

Overview

International students studying full-time at a recognized post-secondary institution in Newfoundland and Labrador may be eligible for coverage under the Medical Care Plan (MCP), administered by the Provincial Government .

Who is Eligible?

• You hold a valid study permit issued before arriving in Canada.
• You are enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program in Newfoundland and Labrador for at least 12 months.
• Your dependents (spouse/children) living with you in the province may also be eligible if proper documentation is provided.

How to Apply

To apply for MCP:

1. Download and complete the application form from the Provincial Government website .
2. Submit the completed form with original documents:
   • In person at one of the listed addresses, OR
   • By mail to the addresses provided on the form

Coverage begins either on the first day of full-time studies or upon arrival in the province, whichever is later. A current letter of enrollment is required for registration and annual renewal.

What's Covered?

MCP covers services listed under the Medical Care Insured Services Regulations and the Hospital Insurance Plan Regulations.

Opting Out of CNA's Insurance

CNA provides accident insurance for international students, but this does not cover routine medical services. Students with equivalent coverage may opt out by providing proof to the International Student Coordinator before registration.

Temporary Travel Outside Newfoundland and Labrador

MCP coverage continues during travel for up to 182 days in a 365-day period, provided residency requirements are met. Students must apply for an Out-of-Province Coverage Certificate before leaving.

The college does not offer scholarships or bursaries to international students upon admission.

However, we do provide a searchable database of scholarships or bursaries that an international student may be eligible to apply for once enrolled into a program at the college. Eligibility is usually determined by the student's academic performance.

Deadlines for paying required fees are outlined in the College's Academic Dates. The College may grant credit to students to cover tuition and/or materials fees only (credit is not available to cover books or residence fees).

The College may from time-to-time institute equipment lease/purchase programs for which credit may be granted. Students applying for financial credit must meet with a Student Services representative for assessment of their request. Students with unpaid fees from previous semesters are not eligible for financial credit.

Financial Contract

If financial credit is recommended, the student must complete a Financial Contract in consultation with a Student Services representative. The Financial Contract will specify what is covered and for what period of time – not to extend beyond the semester within which the contract is completed. Campus Administration or an authorized designate must review and sign the completed Financial Contract.

The student is subject to collection action if the account is not paid.

Students Receiving Student Loans

Students with confirmed student loans are eligible for credit. When the student loan is issued, the amount owing will be deducted by the College as specified in the Financial Contract.

Students Receiving External Funding

Students with documentation confirming external funding will be granted credit and are expected to pay their fees once they are in possession of their funding as agreed to in the Financial Contract.

Students Not Receiving Student Loans or External Funding

Students who do not meet the above criteria may be granted financial credit only in exceptional circumstances, and only with written approval from Campus Administration or their designate.

What to Include in Your Appeal

The written appeal should include, but is not limited to:

• Your student number
• Your program and campus
• Clear rationale for requesting the reversal of fee(s)
• Any documents that support your appeal

Review Process

Once received, the Director of Finance will review your appeal and may follow up with you or the campus for clarification. A committee will then meet to consider the request and make a recommendation to the Vice President of Finance and Administration. You will be notified once a decision is made.

Privacy Notice

The College collects personal information under the authority of the College Act, 1996 to process your appeal. Only information necessary for this process will be shared with the review committee.

Receipts and Documentation

Ensure you retain receipts for all financial transactions with the College. These are essential for resolving any discrepancies. If you do not have a receipt, the College's financial records will be used as the basis for any decisions.
