Work Integrated Learning
Work-integrated learning (WIL) is a process used to integrate student's academic studies through a real work experience or a practice setting. The Information Technology programs provide students with many opportunities to acquire hands-on, practical experience through interactive labs, co-curricular activities, capstone projects and program-related work placements. The work placements for Information Technology students include: Work Term, Co-operative Education and Work Exposure.
Work Term
The work term placement is 15 weeks in duration and is a required component of the Systems and Network Administration program. The work term provides a unique learning experience in a real work place setting where students can develop their professional and technical skills to enhance future employability. Participation in the work term is determined through a competitive process. Work terms must be program relevant and will follow the successful completion of the preceding academic terms with a Grade Point Average of at least 2.00.
Co-operative Education
The Software Development (Co-op) program includes three (3) Co-op Education placements. The Co-op placement is 12-16 weeks in duration based on at least 35 hours of paid work per week. Eligibility for Co-op placements is determined through a competitive process and successful completion of all courses in Semester 2, 4, and 6 prior with a Grade Point Average of at least 2.00.
Students are expected to learn, develop, and demonstrate the high standards of behavior and performance normally expected in the work environment. Students will be evaluated by their Co-op Coordinator based on assigned work, professional attitude and behaviors. To be eligible for a Co-op placement, students will be expected to complete this course to the standards set forth by the Co-operative Education Office
Work Experience
Work Experience provides students an opportunity to integrate academic study with a supervised work experience. Students get a hands-on learning experience in a business environment and an opportunity to network to enhance career opportunities.
Several programs within the Information Technology cluster have seven (7) week Work Experiences. These include the Advanced Software Development, Enterprise Web Development and the Information Management programs.
Eligibility for Work Exposure is based on successful completion of all courses of all course in the preceding academic terms with a Grade Point Average of at least 2.00.
