STEPHENVILLE, NL – Many have seen the horrific images on global news channels and social media, as life for the people of Ukraine has undoubtedly changed forever.
Bombings, people losing lives and homes, families getting separated, people fleeing the country in search of safety – all things that are unimaginable for many people in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). But that doesn’t mean a helping hand can’t be extended from this side of the world.
Liz Kidd, CNA President & CEO, says the college is launching a three-week Ukraine Humanitarian Aid fundraising campaign, starting Monday, March 28, aimed at providing support to the people of Ukraine through the Canadian Red Cross. The goal is to raise $20,000, and while some may think it’s lofty, she believes anything is possible when people come together.
“CNA is built on a foundation that is more than just providing an education,” said Kidd. “We need to continue to set the standards for humanity. What’s happening in the Ukraine could easily happen anywhere around the globe. And if the situation were reversed, it’s certain that we would want others to step up and be there for us in a time of dire need. This could be for basics, like food and clothing, or maybe covering the cost of relocating people from a war-torn region. Whatever it is, we are ready to do our part. But we can’t do it alone.”
An appeal is being made to CNA’s employees, students, alumni, and the college’s community partners for whatever they are able to contribute, as every dollar is urgently needed.
Kidd notes the college’s executive team has committed its support behind the fundraiser. She also expresses her gratitude for partners, who have generously committed to matching the first $10,000 raised through this campaign.
“We know times are tough financially for a lot of people, as we emerge from a pandemic and head toward an economic recovery,” she said. “We also know the level of generosity of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians when it comes to helping those less fortunate than ourselves. I know that if everyone were to dig deep, we could become part of the larger efforts to help these war-ravaged people and #StandWithUkraine.”
