February 17, 2003 – College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is hosting a series of seminars provided by the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Oil Heat Association (COHA) at several of the college’s campuses throughout the province.

The seminars, which began in January and will continue on until June, are composed of a two-part presentation – the first covering Heating Oil Storage Tank System Regulations Installation Requirements, and the second demonstrating the Proper Installation of Domestic Oil Tanks including installation responsibilities of installers working in the industry.

In the first seminar, held on January 28 at CNA’s Seal Cove campus, student and industry workers took part in a demonstration on the proper installation procedures for fuel systems 2,500 litres and less in size.

Equipment used in this demonstration and future seminars are provided by industry suppliers and will be donated to the college, at an approximate value of $2,000 per seminar. The donated equipment will be utilized by appropriate training programs at the college such as the Oil Burner Mechanic program at Seal Cove campus, and the Steamfitter/Pipefitter program in Clarenville.

These seminars follow new Heating Oil Storage Tank System regulations put forth by the Department of Environment in April of 2002, governing the installation and operation of fuel systems 2,500 litres and less in size.

Shawn Paul, Community Relations Officer at Seal Cove campus and member of the Canadian Oil Heat Association’s Technical Committee, says that these seminars are invaluable to students and industry workers, and the donation of equipment will carry long-term benefits.

“This is a true example of an effective partnership of the college, COHA, and the Department of Environment, which will benefit students of College of the North Atlantic and therefore the oil and gas industry.”

Another seminar was hosted on February 13 at Clarenville campus, and others will follow on April 9 at Grand Falls-Windsor campus, April 10 at Corner Brook campus, and June 23 at Happy Valley-Goose Bay campus.
