College of the North Atlantic (CNA) has been awarded three APEX 2007 Awards of Excellence for its work in marketing and public relations.

APEX 2007 – the 19th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence – is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures and websites. Awards were given in 105 communications categories with close to 5,000 entries being submitted this year. The Marketing and Communications Department at CNA took home honours in three categories.

In addition to receiving Certificates of Excellence, the college has permission to use the “APEX 2007 winner” logo in its publications and on its website for the next year. CNA will also be listed in a special awards issue of Writing that Works, a magazine published by APEX.

According to the APEX 2007 judges, "The awards were based on excellence in graphic design, quality of editorial content and the success of the entry in conveying the message and achieving overall communications effectiveness."

This is the first time CNA has entered and won awards from this competition and Stephen Lee, CNA’s manager of marketing and communications, says it is an honour for the college to be recognized.

“For 2006, we took a new, coordinated approach with our marketing efforts and launched a comprehensive branding campaign that saw us create a fresh new look that was applied consistently across all of our marketing materials,” says Lee. “We were confident the campaign was working as we monitor the results, but winning these awards is industry confirmation that CNA’s marketing efforts are among the very best.”

CNA took its first award in the Marketing and Public Relations Campaign category, entering its Choose CNA programs and services guide, the Quick Facts brochure, the Study in Canada international brochure, the provincial/national lure brochure, the Calendar and the Comprehensive Arts and Science brochure.

The college also took an award in the Meeting and Event Campaign and Program category submitting material created for the provincial Oil and Gas Seminar held in 2006.

Finally, Tanya Alexander, public information officer, took an award for Marketing and Public Relations Writing.

Alexander won this award for an article written about Richard Miller, an Adult Basic Education student who overcame illiteracy and uses his story to inspire others to complete their studies.

“I am thrilled with this award,” says Alexander. “The story for which I won: You Can’t Start from the Roof Down, was one of a series of success stories and part of the Adult Basic Education campaign undertaken by CNA’s Marketing and Communications department. It is wonderful to be acknowledged, but it holds additional meaning to win an award for such an important topic – the power of literacy.”

Corinne Dunne, the college’s vice-president of Development/College Advancement, who oversees the college’s marketing efforts, says she’s extremely proud of the accomplishments of the marketing and communications department and that this recognition is well deserved.

“We have an exceptional team of talented individuals in place and the materials we are producing speak for themselves,” she says. “People from outside the college often ask me who does the college’s marketing and I’m always proud to tell them that we do it all in-house. We receive many compliments about our materials and other promotional items and I’m delighted that the team has been recognized with these awards.”
