Bev Maloney, Millwright instructor at College of the North Atlantic's Corner Brook Campus, gives MP Gerry Byrne a demonstration on a piece of equipment used by students in her program. The Minister of State for ACOA and MP for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte was in Corner Brook last week to help officially open the campus' Millwright and Welding shops.

January 20, 2003 - The Honorable Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Member of Parliament for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, and Pamela Walsh, President of College of the North Atlantic, officially opened two state-of-the-art training centres at the Corner Brook Campus of College of the North Atlantic on Monday, January 20, 2003.

These centres are the result of the college and ACOA’s efforts to respond to national labour market trends indicating a skills shortage in the industrial trades sector. As a result, the campus has re-introduced the entry-level program in Welding and introduced entry and advanced-level training in Industrial Mechanics (Millwright). These offerings have been made possible through ACOA funding totaling $514,750.

The ACOA funding was used to purchase modern equipment such as welders, lathes, drill presses, laser alignment and vibration analyzing units, power saws, milling machines, grinders, and various demonstration devices. Use of this equipment ensures that students are receiving state-of-the-art training and developing the skills necessary to meet the demands of industry.

These two new programs will help alleviate the projected shortage in the industrial trades sector, and are essential components of a comprehensive set of programs at the Corner Brook campus specifically identified to meet the increasing demand by industry for skilled personnel.
