January 24, 2003 – As most people were enjoying their Christmas holidays this year, one family was struck with tragedy. The Bradbury’s of Stephenville Crossing were victims of a house fire on New Year’s Eve, and lost a family member as well as their home.

Barb Ryan is an instructor for the Commercial Cooking and Baking programs at College of the North Atlantic’s Bay St. George campus. She heard about the tragedy during the holidays and when she and her students returned, all were in agreement that something could be done to at least help ease the family’s financial burden.

“As soon as the students came back from holidays, we decided to put a luncheon together,” she says.

“We usually do fundraisers for groups in the area like The Sick Children’s Foundation, and given the fact that this was so close to home, we thought it was a priority. There was no question.”

Students were supervised at the January 16 luncheon by Ryan and Chef Eric King, also an instructor for both programs. He says that the hard work was completed by the students.

“Cooking and Baking students worked very hard to pull this off,” says King.

“They did it all themselves.”

The group was hoping to raise $1,000, but thanks to strong support in the community, they surpassed their goal and reached over $1,200.

Betty Ward, a relative of the family, attended the luncheon, and was very moved by the support.

“On behalf of my sister and her family, I thank you very much. She couldn’t come today, but she spoke about this kindness,” said Ward.

“She just can’t believe how good people have been.”
