College of the North Atlantic (CNA) graduate Robyn Murphy has a very successful career as a Seniors Outreach Fieldworker with the City of St. John’s.

It all started when she met with a CNA career councilor who sparked her interest in the Community Recreation Leadership program. Once enrolled, Murphy realized she had found her calling.

After being introduced to the Seniors Outreach Program with the City of St. John’s during her studies, Murphy completed a four-week work term with them. Upon graduating from CNA she held a summer job with the program, which resulted in earning her current position.

Murphy’s supervisor at the City of St. John’s has seen her at her best, noting she is a hard working individual that has become an asset to their organization.

“The summer of 2007 was one of the best summers to date, and I believe Robyn had a lot to do with that,” commented Jennifer Langmead, Adult Services Coordinator for St. John’s. “She is so enthusiastic, yet sympathetic to the needs of the participants. Since she came on board the program has blossomed. She is very knowledgeable of programming ideas, and also how to successfully implement ideas.”

Robyn is a very organized, highly motivated individual and a great motivator of staff and participants. She runs programming at five independent living seniors’ apartment complexes in St. John’s. She also is the lead hand in monthly Special Events at City Hall which attracts an average of 90 seniors.

The job keeps Murphy hopping – but she’s a well rounded individual, with fantastic skills who admits the job was open to her because of her work term through CNA.

“Our goal is to extend services to as many older adults as possible within the City of St. John’s and provide them an opportunity to pursue recreation and leisure, in hopes of enriching their lives,” explained Murphy. “I feel the Community Recreation Leadership program at CNA has certainly prepared me well for my field of work.

“I have been working for over a year and a half now and it is a very fulfilling job, something that I feel is a key component to a great career. Having a job that makes you happy is certainly an excellent goal to achieve. My success had a lot to do with getting out into the community and making an impact.”
