The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, and the Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, announced today that public K-12 schools and campuses of Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic on the island portion of the province will remain closed on Wednesday, January 8. Once again, students attending private schools are asked to contact their institutions directly to determine if classes are going ahead.
 
This measure is necessary to allow building systems to be brought back to full operation, and to test the impact on current power supplies – while also ensuring all facilities are safe environments to which students can return.
 
Education facilities in Labrador are not impacted by this announcement. In addition, six small K-12 schools powered by diesel fuel in St. Brendan’s, McCallum, Little Bay Islands, Ramea, Grey River and Francois are expected to open tomorrow.
 
Residents are reminded that conservation of power remains crucial as Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Newfoundland Power crews continue their work to stabilize service throughout the province.
