GI1211   History of Photography

Course Overview:

This course will survey the history of photography starting just before its invention in 1839 to the present, meeting its inventors and most influential photographers, and emphasizing the technical and aesthetic development of photography as a medium of historical and artistic expression. This course will touch on photography's impact on culture and art, documentary and commercial use, as well as its use in exploration and the sciences. The course combines illustrated lectures with hands-on observation of 19th and 20th century photographic materials such as cameras and darkroom equipment, and vintage photographs such as daguerreotypes, tintypes and ambrotype.
