Why should I disclose my disability?
As a college student we will not know about your disability unless you tell us. By disclosing, you will be able to access the disability related accommodations available to support your success. As a student with a disability you may also qualify for specific grants and scholarships. If we know you have a disability, we can ensure you are well informed about the many resources available to assist you in college.
How do I disclose my disability?

The first opportunity to disclose is on the application form. If you indicate here you have a disability your application is copied to Accessibility Services and a coordinator will follow up with you to discuss your disability related needs.

If you do not disclose on the application, you may still disclose at any time by calling the Accessibility Services Coordinator (ASC) at the campus you will be attending. The ASC will be happy to talk with you about the services and supports available to you in your program.

You can disclose at any time in your program, however, because some accommodations may take more time to arrange or may be time sensitive, it is best to have a conversation with the ASC as early in your program as possible.

What documentation will I have to provide?

You will have to provide current documentation that states what your disability is. If you have a learning disability, you will need to provide a copy. Please check with your high school to ensure you have a current psycho-educational assessment (or an updated assessment which reconfirms your diagnosis and updates your achievement) ready to take with you when you graduate. For all other disabilities, you will need to have the appropriate medical professional fill out the Verification of Eligibility form (103kb)

Please take note, if you are applying for a Canada Student Loan you will need to have their verification of eligibility form filled out in order to access the grants available to students with disabilities. We will accept a copy of the student aid form as your verification for the college. Please remember to make a copy before submitting to student aid.

Can I get the same accommodations I get in high school?

The ASC will review your documentation and discuss with you the accommodations you can avail of in your college program. With a few exceptions, such as personal care, one on one instruction, modified outcomes, etc., you will have access to the accommodations appropriate for your disability. Depending on your high school, the accommodations may look a little different in college. For example, if you qualify for a reader, you will use assistive technology such as Kurzweil or if you use a scribe in school, you will use a program called Dragon Naturally Speaking here at college. When you disclose early, the ASC will discuss the accommodations in college with you so you are familiar with our process before your program starts.
