Library Services staff reserve the right to restrict borrowing privileges. Borrowers are responsible for knowing when items are due and returning them on time. Borrowers with overdue items will have their circulation privileges suspended. Persons who fail to return, renew, or pay for overdue items will be invoiced by the College for replacement costs, will not be issued marks, certificates, or diplomas, and will not be permitted to register for College courses until restitution is made.
Renewals
A borrower can renew the loan of general collection books or back issues of magazines, provided that no holds have been placed on these items. The lending library, however, reserves the right to restrict the number of renewals that will be permitted.
Holds
Holds can be placed on items that are checked out by other borrowers. Once a held item is returned, the person who placed the hold has three days to pick it up.
Intercampus Loans
Through our discovery service,
Enterprise , searchers can discover what is available at any and all campus library learning commons collections. Requests for intercampus loans can be made at your campus library learning commons circulation desk. You can also email or telephone your campus library learning commons.
Interlibrary Loans
Requests to borrow items from libraries outside the College system can be made at your campus library learning commons circulation desk. You can also telephone or email your campus library learning commons.
According to College policy, there is no charge to students for ILLs intended to support CNA courses. As there may be charges to your campus library learning commons, sometimes considerable, to obtain ILLs, however, we reserve the right to restrict your access to this service. The interlibrary loan service should generally not be used to obtain required textbooks; and any costs associated with obtaining required texts through ILL will usually need to be paid by the borrower in advance.
As with our own library catalogue, which is searchable over
Enterprise , the catalogues of many other libraries and library systems can be searched over the World Wide Web. Some catalogues of note are:
Please note the following:
- Memorial University students or faculty who want to borrow items from the MUN libraries should do that directly through the DistancePlus service .
User Information
Anyone wishing to use Circulation Services will be asked to provide his/her name, address, and other contact information. All user information is considered confidential.
Library Services staff are available at all campuses to help students, faculty, and staff with their information/research needs. Your campus library offers one-on-one consultation, library tours, and group instructional sessions on how to locate and evaluate information. Our “Find Books, Articles, and Other Resources” section, also provides information on how to find particular kinds of resources. Please feel free to ask Library Services staff for help with your research.
Each campus library provides access to computers. These computers are all networked either to a laser printer or a photocopier and can be used for library research or for other purposes.
CNA students doing work on their courses have first priority on these computers. As a demonstration of respect and cooperation, therefore, students who want or need to use library computers for other than course work should, if possible, restrict their usage to periods of time when the demand is low, such as early in the morning, late in the afternoon, in the evening, or on the weekend. In periods of high demand, furthermore, students who are using computers but are not involved in course work, may be requested to discontinue their usage until demand has lessened. For information on the use of computing services by the general public, please refer to the
Community User Services section below.
Anyone using library computers is expected to comply with the College of the North Atlantic “Acceptable Use Agreement” for technology resources. A copy of this agreement is appended to the CNA policy entitled
Electronic Information Systems – Use .
CNA Library Services offers a full range of research assistance services to our online learners. Learners can visit one of our campus libraries learning commons in person, send a message to Library Services, Online Learning or to one of our libraries learning commons using our
Ask a Librarian form, or simply login to our
Enterprise discovery service. Our aim is to help all CNA learners achieve success.
All campus libraries of College of the North Atlantic are open to the public. Community access is offered according to the following general guidelines:
- Community users may borrow circulating materials. All libraries, however, have the right to restrict circulation to community users. When materials are in high demand by our students or that demand is anticipated, our students take priority. Also, if a community user has borrowed an item that is needed by one of our students, that item will be recalled.
- Community users, including groups such as high school and private college classes, may request library tours. It is preferable to schedule these activities for convenient times that do not interfere with our students.
- Community users have access to our reference services during opening hours. Our students’ requests take priority.
- Community users also have access to our computing services, including accompanying printers; but the following restrictions should be noted. Most libraries will restrict community access to computing services when our student demand is high, and some libraries may offer community access only at scheduled times. Also, while community users are permitted to print documents, some libraries may place specific restrictions on this privilege.
- Community users who make use of computing services must be aware of and follow the College of the North Atlantic “Acceptable Use Agreement” for technology resources. A copy of this agreement is appended to the policy entitled Electronic Information Systems – Use .
